At Tooth By Tooth Orthodontics, we specialize in helping individuals with crowded teeth and narrow jaws achieve a straighter, healthier smile.

Expanders – How They Work

Do you have crowded teeth or a narrow jaw? Our team at Tooth By Tooth Orthodontics can help! We fix these problems through two primary methods: bone spreading and tooth moving.

Bone Spreading (Skeletal Expansion):

Imagine your jaw is like a horseshoe. Bone spreading makes the horseshoe wider. This creates more space for your teeth to fit nicely. It mostly works on growing kids and teens because their jaw bones are soft and not fixed. Special appliances called expanders are used to gently widen the jaw over time in a stable manner. Skeletal expansion is an effective tool in the upper jaw; however, the lower jaw has limitations.

Tooth Moving (Dental Expansion):

This is like rearranging furniture in your mouth. Braces or clear aligners gently push your teeth into the right places. This works well for both kids, teens and adults. Tooth moving is also effective for both upper and lower teeth.

Why Are Expanders Important?

Sometimes, just moving teeth isn’t enough. Expanders can be the key to unlocking a healthy, beautiful smile. They can:

* Make space for crowded teeth
* Fix a narrow jaw
* Improve your bite
* Even help you breathe better (in some cases)

The Right Choice for You:

Every smile is unique, so we tailor our approach to each individual’s specific needs. As orthodontists, we consider your age, jawbone development and what needs fixing.
